On Monday April 7, 2025, the United States announced it will impose an additional 50% tariff on imports from China, effective 12:01AM EST, Wednesday, April 9.

ADDITIONAL 50% ON CHINESE IMPORTS

This action builds on previously enacted tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which include a 34% tariff targeting Chinese-origin goods and a 20% general tariff introduced earlier this month. With the new measure, the cumulative duty on Chinese imports will reach 104% in new tariffs.  Factoring in existing Section 301 on top of these rates, 7.5-25% depending on commodity, could mean tariffs of up to 129% for some products out of China.

CHINA PUTS 34% TARIFF ON ALL U.S. GOODS

April 9, 2025 | Overnight, China announced a significant escalation in its trade dispute with the United States by increasing tariffs on U.S. imports from 34% to 84%, effective April 10, 2025. This move is a direct response to the U.S. raising tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%.

China’s Ministry of Commerce has maintained its earlier response, confirming a 34% tariff on all U.S. goods set to begin April 10. This is in addition to a pre-existing 10% tariff on imported goods applied across the board, bringing the total tariff burden on U.S. exports to China to approximately 44%.

Chinese authorities have also announced export restrictions on rare earth materials and opened investigations into select U.S.-based companies operating within the country.
