On Sunday, July 25, 2021, Typhoon In-Fa wreaked havoc on the Shanghai area, causing some of the world’s busiest maritime ports to shut down until at least Tuesday.
According to local officials, all Shanghai ports, as well as some in adjacent regions, will remain closed after the severe storms over the weekend. Yangshan, which is part of the world’s largest cluster of container terminals and is located offshore to the south of Shanghai, is among the impacted ports.
Hundreds of vessels, including all major container ships, were evacuated from Yangshan port over the weekend as wind speeds off the coast reached up to 102 kilometers per hour (63 mph), according to the port’s office of maritime affairs.
Shanghai’s two major airports, as well as several metro lines and high-speed rail service, began reopening Monday afternoon.
Port closures will add further delays to deliveries of container goods, oil products, liquefied natural gas, and bulk commodities such as wheat; however, are expected to reopen early this week.
