WORK STOPPAGE AVERTED: U.S. EAST COAST AND GULF COAST PORTS REMAIN OPERATIONAL

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) announced on January 8, 2025, that they have reached a tentative agreement on all terms for a new six-year Master Contract. Both parties have agreed to continue operating under the existing contract while the ILA’s Wage Scale Committee and USMX members proceed with the ratification process.

“This is a win-win agreement that creates ILA jobs, supports American consumers and businesses, and keeps the American economy the key hub of the global marketplace.”

TENTATIVE AGREEMENT: A COLLABORATIVE SUCCES

In a joint statement, the ILA and USMX confirmed that the agreement averts the potential work stoppage previously scheduled for January 15, 2025. “This agreement protects current ILA jobs and establishes a framework for implementing technologies that will create more jobs while modernizing East and Gulf coast ports—making them safer, more efficient, and better equipped to maintain robust supply networks,” the statement read. The tentative agreement has been described as a collaborative success.

Details of the agreement have not been disclosed, allowing ILA rank-and-file members and USMX representatives to thoroughly review the terms before voting on ratification.
