On July 27, 2021, the Port of Houston suffered a significant technical failure on systems used to operate both Barbours Cut and Bayport Container Terminals just before the truck gates opened at 7:00 a.m.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS
7:00 a.m. – Barbours Cut and Bayport Container Terminals systems failure reported.
10:00 a.m. – Application and associated data migrated to redundant storage devices, terminals were back up and running.
12:00 p.m. – The redundant storage devices also suffer failure.
Latest – Terminals have been unable to execute any transactions.

IMPACT TO OPERATIONS

  • Vessels that were already in progress have been able to continue working
  • New vessel starts have not been possible
  • Truck gates at both container facilities are also idle

According to the Port of Houston, the configuration of all components has begun, however, advises restoration will be a slow process.  Once operations resume, daily extended gate hours as well as weekend gates will be provided to assist in alleviating any backlog of cargo.

The Port of Houston emphasized that this was not a cyber-attack on the port’s operating system.
