If the shipping industry was a country, its carbon footprint would be the sixth largest in the world making it a significant factor in global carbon reduction efforts.       In 2023, the International Maritime Organization, shipping’s global governing body, published a revised GHG strategy that requires the industry to have at least 5%, but striving for 10%, zero and near-zero GHG emission fuels in use by 2030.

      In 2024, the Getting to Zero Coalition’s Annual Climate Action in Shipping report declared, all actors are lagging in achieving the 5-10% goal; rapid scale-up of demand for scalable zero-emission fuels must happen.
