On Tuesday, November 16th, the Port of Vancouver announced that all rail access had been cut due to inclement weather further east.
Heavy downpours over two days in the Pacific province of British Columbia have caused major flooding which has led to the closure of rail routes run by Canadian Pacific Rail and Canadian National Railway. Several highways, including all major roads to Vancouver, have also been closed.
Canada is one of the world’s largest grain exporters, however, this stoppage could negatively affect the shipments of grain, coal, and potassium-rich salt. Most of the movement of wheat and canola has been paused for the time being.
Delays are expected through the rest of the week and could last for several weeks before service resumes.
