The Port of Nevada officially opened this month. Its first container was received on June 3rd. Located in Fernley, 30 minutes east of Reno, the 224-acre inland port handles imports and exports between northern Nevada and the Port of Oakland.
The President of the Port of Nevada, Stuart Lichter, emphasized the benefits of direct rail access between Reno and the West Coast, citing increased cargo capacity, improved cost efficiency, and decreased carbon emissions.
Trucks account for 25% of all transportation-relation greenhouse gas emissions, while trains account for just 2%.
On the Oakland to Reno route, a truck requires 3.5 times more energy and produces 3.5 times more tons of CO2 and SO2 em4issions than a train.

ADDITIONAL PORT OPENINGS IN 2024
On February 1, 2024, UP launched an inland service between the ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles and Phoenix, Arizona targeting the busy West Coast corridor. Although UP’s Phoenix Intermodal Terminal has a strong business base, it’s uncertain how much business will be brought to northern Nevada for the Port of Oakland. However, there is optimistic feedback regarding the new intermodal service, citing potential savings and efficiencies for customers, business opportunities, and more sustainable solutions.
A third inland terminal also opened in mid-February in Tri-Cities, Wash., near the Oregon border, serving the ports of Seattle and Tacoma with farm product shipments.
