Port of Montreal Shippers Brace for Labor Dispute Disruptions

Continuing labor negotiations between the Port of Montreal Employers Association and the port’s longshoremen ended this past Sunday, February 28th, without reaching an agreement.

Concerns around a possible renewed labor strike taking place at the Port of Montreal are beginning to rise as the truce set between the two parties will be coming to an end on March 21st, 2021. In anticipation of a possible labor stoppage, some importers have already begun to divert their cargo away from this port, to avoid the kind of delays that were seen there last summer.

In August 2020, Montreal longshoreman stopped labor at the port for 19 days, causing severe supply chain disruptions beyond that time frame, after negotiations with the Montreal waterfront employers broke down. That strike ended when the two groups agreed to the truce, however, that truce is now set to expire, and critical work issues have yet to be resolved. The two parties have not been able to establish a labor agreement and sound contract since December of 2018.

In an effort to bring the labor dispute to an end before the end of the truce on the 21st of this month, both parties have been ordered to begin a mediation session starting this Friday, March 5th.
