MSC and Maersk 2M Alliance to End in 2025

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Maersk announced the termination of their 10-year 2M Alliance in 2025. Established in 2015, The 2M partnership was formed to optimize ship utilization and manage cargo volume and has served over 30% the world’s container trade.

The Alliance served its purpose and provided the efficiency the industry needed at the time. Eight years later, the industry has evolved and is facing different challenges, opening areas of opportunity for the carriers to focus on their individual strategies.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MSC AND MAERSK ALLIANCE TERMINATION

  3. Both carriers will prioritize individual plans

There will be no immediate impact to stakeholders across all trade lines. However, the carriers will slowly phase out the partnership over the next two years, allowing ample time for support to be provided to clients pre and post Alliance termination.

MSC is focused on the development of their inland network, newly launched air cargo division, and logistics offerings. Maersk rapidly grew their profitability in the last three years, providing a foundation advance their integrated strategy with a series of targeted acquisitions across the world.

The Alliance termination will allow the container lines to prioritize individual strategies and gain more control of their own air, ocean, and land networks.
