UNION LABOR “NO SHOW” JOB ACTION IMPACTS WEST COAST PORT OPERATIONS
Labor unrest at several West Coast ports this morning led to port closures. International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 13 members staged a series of “no show” job actions on today. Operations at several West Coast Ports, including the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, and Oakland International Container Terminal were impacted.
“Today, the ILWU is staging concerted and disruptive work actions that have effectively shut down operations at some marine terminals at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Union is also staging similar work actions that have shut down or severely impacted terminal operations at the Ports of Oakland, Tacoma, Seattle, and Hueneme.”
“On June 2, 2023, the rank-and-file membership of the Southern California ILWU has taken it upon themselves to voice their displeasure with the ocean carriers’ and terminal operators’ position (on contract negotiations).”
Today’s work stoppage marks the third in recent months as tensions over contract negotiations continue. The ongoing negotiations and Union labor actions may continue to cause delays at the ports and potential rerouting of imports to Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports. At issue, are union worker wages and pension benefits.
