NET ZERO EMISSIONS TRACKING METHODOLOGY FOR AIR TRANSPORT

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced plans to release an annual report called “Track Zero” to monitor the progress of the aviation industry in achieving its commitment to Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. This report will utilize IATA’s Net Zero Tracking Methodology, developed in collaboration with industry experts. The NetZero Tracking Methodology involves collecting and analyzing data from IATA member airlines on an industry-wide scale, with the data being validated and reported annually in the fourth quarter. The first report, containing airline-contributed data, is scheduled for publication in Q4 2024. Non-IATA member airlines are also encouraged to take part in this reporting initiative.

“Transparency is a critical element of aviation’s decarbonization. We will report our progress annually to ensure standardized, accurate and comprehensive reporting of aviation’s journey to net zero. Industry-level data in the Track Zero report will help airlines, governments, and investors with tools to improve decision-making to accelerate progress.”

IATA Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist

NET ZERO TRACKING METHODOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

The Net Zero Tracking Methodology offers standardized guidance to the aviation industry’s journey toward achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Key features of the program includes:

Standardization – it establishes a transparent framework that ensures accurate reporting and can be adopted industry-wide. The methodology identifies the relevant emissions scope, sources, and tracking processes, providing consistency in measurement.

Accuracy – it incorporates best practices for data collection and validation, minimizing administrative burdens.

Comprehensive – the methodology allows for complete reporting of various decarbonization activities throughout the lifecycle, including the use of conventional and sustainable aviation fuel, carbon offsets and capture, as well as future power sources like hybrid-electric, electric, and hydrogen-powered aircraft.

The decision to publish the Track Zero report aligns with IATA’s roadmaps for achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The roadmaps address five essential areas: aircraft technology, energy infrastructure, operations, finance, and policy. These roadmaps provide for the aviation industry and will be refined based on the insights gained from the Track Zero report, practical experience, and emerging technologies. IATA expects this process will help the aviation industry establish interim milestones on its path to achieving net zero emissions.

INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION (IATA)

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing some 300 airlines or 83% of total air traffic. IATA supports many areas of aviation activity and helps formulate industry policy on critical aviation issues.
