ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF THE FOREST GARDEN
A primary focus of TREES’ program is their Forest Garden Approach which enables farmers to work the land to both restore and protect it. This approach also allows the farmers to grow extra food and resources for personal use and selling, which is more than what traditional large-scale farming methods can achieve. The agriculture techniques these farmers use can reduce the harmful impacts of climate change and allows farmers to endure difficult situations like extended hot weather and long periods without rain. On average, a forest garden offsets 144.64 metric tons of carbon dioxide per acre of land over 20 years.
In partnership with TREES, Green Worldwide’s donations directly impact:
Improved Tree Cover – A typical one-acre Forest Garden is home to approximately 2,500 to 4,000 trees, primarily consisting of native or adapted species. These trees play a vital role in safeguarding the soil and crops within the Forest Garden. Many trees offer valuable resources like fruits, nuts, timber, fodder, and fuel.
Carbon Storage – In 20 years, the average Forest Garden has the capacity to offset around 144.64 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per acre. This carbon is stored within the trees, plants, and soil.
Addressing Climate Change – Farmers adopt climate-smart practices within Forest Gardens, providing protection against extreme heat, prolonged droughts, and the unpredictable weather patterns associated with climate change. For instance, in regions susceptible to increased flooding, TREES personnel instruct farmers in constructing earthworks and cultivating protective grasses and crops to redirect excess water during the rainy season.
Enhanced Biodiversity – Farmers are encouraged to diversify crop cultivation to ensure a year-round source of sustenance. Typically, when farmers join the program, they focus on cultivating one or two crops. Upon graduation, they have expanded to include dozens of various species. As the variety of plants increases, so does the diversity of wildlife, resulting in an overall improvement in biodiversity.
