JUNE IS PRIDE MONTH

June is a special month that carries immense significance for the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. Pride Month is a time of celebration, acceptance, and advocacy, honoring the history and ongoing struggles of the LGBTQ+ community.

The ongoing struggles are fierce: This month, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the United States for the first time. This is the result of the dramatic increase in anti-LGBTQ+ state legislation across the nation.

Green is focused on creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, where everyone can bring their true, authentic selves. We stand with and support the LGBTQ+ community, including our LGBTQ+ employees.

This year, we have again contributed to the Trevor Project in honor of our LGBTQ+ employees and in support of equality. The Trevor Project advocates for LGBTQ youth mental health through legislation, litigation, and public education. It the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ youth, providing crucial resources and a lifeline of support to those in need.

HISTORY OF PRIDE

The origins of Pride Month can be traced back to the Stonewall Riots, which erupted in New York City on June 28, 1969. The riots were a response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community. The event served as a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, sparking protests, demonstrations, and the formation of numerous activist groups.

One year later, on June 28, 1970, the first-ever Pride parades were held in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago to commemorate the Stonewall Riots and promote visibility and acceptance for LGBTQ+ individuals. Over the years, Pride parades and events have spread globally, creating spaces for LGBTQ+ communities to express their identities and advocate for their rights.

Today, Pride Month is celebrated throughout June, with vibrant parades, cultural festivals, educational events, and initiatives that highlight the achievements and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

THE WORK CONTINUES

As we celebrate Pride Month, we reflect on the history of LGBTQ+ activism and work towards fostering a more accepting and inclusive society. Pride Month reminds us of the progress made and the work that still lies ahead. Let us continue to amplify LGBTQ+ voices, celebrate diversity, and advocate for the rights and well-being of all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Together, we can create a world where every person can live with pride, dignity, and respect.
