LABOR ACTION AT PORT OF HAMBURG

Dockworker strikes are taking place at all terminals of the port of Hamburg starting today, July 9, 2024, and running for 48 hours through July 11 at 7 a.m. local time. The first, second, and third shift will all be participating in the work stoppage.

OPERATIONS WILL BE IMPACTED

The labor strike has ground all terminal operations to a halt. It is expected that these strikes will have a significant impact on the port and may cause vessels to perform “cut and run” departures to avoid delays.

Cut and run departures are when a vessel may only dump a portion of their cargo before departing for their next destinations to avoid delays elsewhere.

CONTRACT NEGOTATIONS CONTINUE

Trade union ver.di is looking for a significant increase in wages, particularly for the lower pay groups seeking an increase from $3.2 per hour implemented retroactively to June 1. Negotiations are scheduled to continue between ver.di and the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS) on July 11 and 12 in Bremen.
