In Week 10 of 2024’s freight market update, we observe railcar shortages in select regions while container supplies rebound elsewhere. Meanwhile, geopolitical challenges continue to impact freight transit times through the Red Sea and Panama Canal.
CONTAINER SUPPLY
There is an improvement in China, with main ports fully stocked, although occasional shortages occur at smaller feeder ports.
LE HAVRE TERMINAL CONGESTION
At Le Havre Terminals, gate-in congestion is causing issues, potentially leading to pass-through charges for additional storage and handling.
CANADIAN WEST COAST PORTS EQUIPMENT SHORTAGE
On the Canadian West Coast, ports are grappling with heavy congestion due to limited Class 1 railcar availability, prompting the suspension of expedited rail service in Vancouver.
PANAMA CANAL WATER LEVELS
Water levels are anticipated to decrease over the next two months, likely dropping below 80 feet by early April. This could result in weight restrictions and delays, with some carriers only accepting cargo weighing less than 8 – 10 tons.
