CTPAT Considering Forced Labor Disclosure Benefit for Shippers

During a recent Customs and Border Protection (CBP) webinar, CTPAT Program Director Garza answered calls from the trade that discussed making it possible for Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) Trade Compliance program members to report forced labor in their supply chains when they discover it without triggering CBP penalties, a new reporting mechanism similar but distinct from Prior Disclosure.

Director Garza indicated he’s been in discussions with senior leadership at CBP about CTPAT Trade Compliance program members’ desire to actively share information about potential forced labor issues with CBP, but with the assurance of Prior Disclosure-like protections.

CTPAT FORCED LABOR BENEFIT

After the webinar, CTPAT expert Isabelle Vermeersch, CEO of Centipid LLC, shared that, “CTPAT members are working hard to find better ways to work alongside CBP to eradicate forced labor from the supply chain and many believe that the additional investment they make to raise their compliance to the much higher standards required for CTPAT membership could come with measurable benefits in the area of forced labor prevention.”
