The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) issued a notice to shippers advising negative impact to terminal operations at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, stating Local 13 International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is withholding labor leading to work stoppages.

“A majority of the jobs for last night’s shift went unfilled, including all jobs for cargo-handling equipment operators needed to load and unload cargo. The workers who did show up were released because there was not a full complement of ILWU members to operate the terminals.”

After the Union withheld labor for this morning’s shift, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have been effectively shut down. This latest action by the Union is in response to continuous negotiations over West Coast port contracts – just weeks after cargo handling disruptions and delays took place at the ports due to ILWU Local 13 non-compliance with staggered meal break schedules.

The ongoing negotiations and Union responses could continue to cause delays at the ports and potential rerouting of imports to Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports.
