LIVERPOOL PORT CONTAINERS’ WORKERS PLAN STRIKE

Nearly 560 port container operations and engineer workers are planning a two-week strike from September 19 through October 3 due to disagreements over wages. Mersey Dock and Harbor Company (MDHD), a member of Peel Ports Group, oversees operations for Liverpool Port which is one of the largest container operations in the United Kingdom.

KEY PLAYERS IN LIVERPOOL STRIKE
  • Unite is Britain and Ireland’s largest union with members working across all sectors of the economy
  • Mersey Dock and Harbour Company (MDHC) owned by Peele Ports oversees operations at Liverpool and Felixstowe ports
  • 2,400 port laborers at Liverpool and Felixstowe are Unite union members
THREATS OF FUTURE STRIKES

Strike organizers assert that the work stoppage will cause serious disruptions to port operations with threats of future strikes should port operations owner  MDHD and Unite fail to reach a wage increase agreement.

Our members at MDHC have Unite’s complete backing and support in these strikes for a fair pay rise.

Sharon Graham, General Secretary at Unite

This planned strike follows on the heels of the Port of Felixstowe worker strike in August which ended without a resolution.

We will continue to urge Unite the Union to keep talking with us so together we can find a resolution to avoid action that will be bad news for the sector, businesses and families, with the effects being felt for many months to come, at a time when container volume demand has started to reduce.

David Huck, Chief Operating Officer at Peel Ports Group
