On Sunday, October 24th, a storm outside the port of Vancouver, Canada caused the loss of 40 shipping containers from a vessel carrying 4,253 TEU. Sixteen crew members were later evacuated from the ship as the falling containers ignited a fire onboard. The boxes that caught fire were carrying more than 50 tons of mining chemicals.
An emergency zone one nautical mile around the anchored vessel, off the coast of Victoria, was declared by the Canadian Coast Guard. The ship was identified as the MV Zim Kingston, managed by Danaos Shipping.
The blaze was extinguished late on Sunday by five remaining crew members who were left aboard the ship to handle the incident. Before the fire began, roughly 40 containers fell overboard. The Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards are now working to track down these lost cargoes.
