COLOMBIAN TRUCKERS STRIKE, SET UP ROADBLOCKS IN PROTEST OF DIESEL FUEL HIKE
Demonstrations, protests, and blockades ground the transportation industry to a near-halt in Colombia this week. Anger over a government price hike on diesel fuel triggered the labor unrest which included truckers going on strike and setting up blockades to impede traffic across Colombia.
COLOMBIA GOVERNMENT REACHES AGREEMENT WITH TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY
In response to the outcry and labor unrest, the federal government of Colombia announced on September 9, 2024, that it reached an agreement with truckers and industry groups to end days of labor unrest and public demonstrations.
The Colombian government agreed to:
Adjust the diesel fuel price increase – This year will see two increments: one of $400, which will be applied following the resolution modification, and another $400 increase, effective from December 1, 2024.
Industry collaboration – Working groups will be established between the national government and union representatives to address the sector’s structural issues and work toward resolving their demands.
Freight movement may see some delays in the coming days as the industry resumes operations and begins processing shipment backlogs. Attacks against the Cano Limon-Covenas and Bicentenario pipelines impacted operations at the state-run oil company Ecopetrol and may further hamper recovery efforts.
