In this Week 12 Freight Market Update edition, we explore significant developments impacting freight operations across various regions.
PANAMA CANAL
Water levels in the Panama Canal are projected to decrease over the next two months, potentially dipping below 80 feet by early April. This decline will likely result in weight restrictions and cargo shipment delays. Some carriers will only accept cargo weighing less than 8 – 10 tons during this period.
CANADIAN WEST COAST PORTS
Ports along the Canadian West Coast are experiencing heavy congestion due to limited availability of Class 1 railcars. As a result, expedited rail service in Vancouver is suspended until further notice. Businesses relying on these ports for shipping should expect potential delays and explore alternative transportation options.
REEFER SUPPLY
Refrigerated container availability, known as reefers, is limited in ports across the U.S. The shortage is due to ongoing issues in the Red Sea delaying empty reefer returns to the impacted ports. Reefer equipment must be booked in advance for shipments from New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk to worldwide destinations effective March 1. Additionally, there will be restrictions on all reefer movement to or via Jebel Ali and Jeddah until further notice. Plan ahead to ensure timely transportation of temperature-sensitive goods.
